Week #4 - February 2, 2025 - Sommet Morin-Heights
Brahm:
Hi Everyone,
This week we are going to Sommet Morin Heights.
Clinic starts at 8:25 outside. Double-check the staff FB page Saturday night for updates or better yet sign up for the staff text updates. Pack your bags the night before so you don’t forget your helmet…gloves…pants…etc.
We have hit the midway mark and your classes are looking great! Snow is in the forecast so the terrain should be even better than last week.
Now is the time to make sure that each student has something to work on. The supervisors will be going through your classes to help you advance your students to the next level. If you feel that one student is lagging, please let a supervisor know and we will help you figure out what is the most important skill to focus on.
Choice of terrain
Morin Heights has multiple chairlifts. The Soleil chair is the easiest, especially for smaller students. There is a green run off of each chair with the exception of the Kicking Horse chair. If the Kicking Horse chair is open, you need permission from a supervisor to go to that section as the terrain is significantly more challenging. We will go over the terrain and show you around the mountain during the morning clinic.
We will also show you which glades are appropriate for your kids and which should be avoided. There is something for everyone in the woods at Morin Heights.
It is important not to rush kids to a harder run until they are ready. It is always better to introduce new skills on easier terrain. Put your students in a position to succeed. Many classes ended up on terrain that was too difficult for them, namely taking blues when the kids were in a snowplow. This does more harm than good as the kids go into survivor mode and are not in a position to learn. If your kids are in snowplow, they are not ready for harder terrain. They should be able to match their skis on the green pitches before you introduce them to blue terrain. Teach them how to balance on the outside ski consistently and you will have a much more enjoyable time as the season progresses.
Reduce the speed of your group as you approach the class signs or the chairlift.
Ski on appropriate terrain and at the speed of your class. Stop or slow down at intersections to avoid losing students making sure that all of your class is behind you. FAST ON FLAT is better than slow on steep.
Lesson Plans
You all now know what level your kids are skiing/riding. It will be easier for you on the slopes if you already have a few ideas rather than trying to make it up on the spot. The kids know when you are lost and they will lose interest. Build an exciting lesson and your kids will return with the same enthusiasm. All instructors must submit a lesson plan prior to their lesson. The lesson plans must be submitted online: WEEKLY SKI LESSON PLAN. You can complete it on your computer, tablet or phone and at any time. Once it is submitted, you will receive a copy by email.
